Position Description:  

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement to include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.


The Office of Library Development is responsible for establishing the strategic direction and tactical implementation of all activities in support of fundraising for the University Libraries. This includes major, principal, annual, planned, and institutional giving, as well as prospect and donor events, gift reporting, gift acknowledgement, stewardship, donor relations, and development communications. In addition, the Office of Library Development manages the activities of the Friends of the Library Board of Directors.

The University Libraries is seeking a Director of Annual Giving to join the successful and dynamic Library Development team. The Director of Annual Giving will lead the comprehensive strategy and execution of the Friends of the Library annual giving program, including multi-channel solicitations with a new focus on digital fundraising. This position also leads special fundraising initiatives and fosters pan-university efforts between University Libraries and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Director of Annual Giving reports to the Executive Director of Library Development and serves as an annual giving frontline fundraiser with a personal portfolio to identify, cultivate, and solicit leadership gifts of $1,000 – $50,000. This position will also develop new strategies to diversify and expand the Friends of the Library donor base, and strengthen relationships with Library donors, staff, and volunteers. The Director will help develop and maintain an active pipeline of qualified prospects, research and analyze data and trends, and prepare reports for Library Development.


Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:  

3+ years of successful annual giving or transferable experience required.
Demonstrated understanding of basic principles and techniques of fundraising related to: strategy and analysis, communications, data management, solicitations in various forms (direct mail, electronic, social media, by phone, and in person), and donor research.
Ability to develop trust and strong collaborative working relationships. Superb interpersonal relationship skills.
Ability to interact effectively with a variety of constituents including donors, alumni, faculty, staff, and volunteers.
Exceptional written and oral communications skills.
Strong organizational and implementation skills.
Ability to multi-task, achieve goals, work independently, show good judgement, and meet deadlines in a dynamic, collaborative work environment.
Exhibits the highest standards of professionalism as evidenced by integrity, initiative, collaboration, critical thinking, accuracy, consistency, timeliness, and attention to detail.
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software or fundraising databases experience is a must.
Strong computer skills are essential, including Microsoft Office software, with demonstrated proficiency in Excel and Word and Outlook
Local and regional travel, evening and some weekend work is required.

Education Requirements:  

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.

Qualifications and Experience:  

5+ years of successful annual giving or transferable experience preferred.
Enthusiasm for University Libraries fundraising in addition to a spirit of creativity.
Familiarity with the University’s DAVIE (Database for Advancing our Vision of Institutional Excellence) customer relationship management (CRM) system
