Biology Instructor
The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an exceptional Biology instructor to teach college-level courses to advanced high school juniors and seniors in a rigorous residential learning environment. Candidates must have a Master’s degree, PhD preferred, in biology or a related field. We welcome applications from candidates with specialization or teaching experience in general biology and one of the following fields: genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or zoology. Position begins August, 2023.
This is a permanent, full-time (10-month) teaching position, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience.
Applicants should have experience teaching biology at a college or advanced high school level. Biology courses offered in our programs include AP biology, AP environmental science, anatomy and physiology, botany, evolution, genetics, marine biology, microbiology, molecular biology, and neuroscience. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach AP Biology, which is a two-semester course, comparable to a year-long introductory biology course in a collegiate environment. The candidate will also have opportunities to develop and teach upper-level biology courses based upon their specialty.
Courses at GSSM are modeled on a college-like schedule and teaching environment. With small class sizes and abundant resources, we offer exceptional courses to academically-motivated junior and senior students in-person at our campus in Hartsville, SC, as well as virtually to students across the state of South Carolina. Hartsville boasts small-town charm with significant opportunities in academia and industry alike. The successful candidate will be expected to work from our campus in Hartsville, SC. The candidate should be prepared to teach both online and residential courses, based upon the needs of the biology department. Experience teaching in virtual or hybrid environments is a plus. A teaching certificate is not required.

Committee meetings, student activity advising, and occasional evening/weekend commitments are a regular part of faculty responsibilities.
