S.C. Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM)
The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an exceptional English instructor who can help talented students achieve a deeper understanding of language and literature. Applicants should have a Master’s degree, Ph.D. preferred, in English or related field, and a love of teaching. Desired qualifications include a strong content background in literature and composition, experience teaching writing and literature at college or advanced high school levels, an understanding of gifted learners, and enthusiasm for teaching motivated and talented high-school-aged students. We welcome applications from candidates with specialization or teaching experience in rhetoric and composition, journalism, and/or creative writing. General academic advising, committee meetings, student activity advising, and occasional evening/weekend commitments are a regular part of faculty responsibilities.
Courses at GSSM are taught at a level comparable to college courses. The core English curriculum currently consists of Junior English (literature-based AP English Language and Composition) and Senior English (AP English Literature and Composition). Current elective courses include Introduction to Creative Writing, Studies in Creative Writing: Poetry, Introduction to Film, Drama, Writing Prose Nonfiction, Shakespeare’s Plays, Topics in Science Fiction, Contemporary Fiction, and Introduction to Philosophy. GSSM encourages the introduction and development of new elective courses. Courses offered will vary each semester depending on the interests and expertise of instructors and on student interest.
This is a full-time (10-month) teaching position, with full benefits. A public school teaching certificate is not required. Salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials, experience, and unique capabilities. The position start date is August 2018.
GSSM offers a collegial teaching environment with motivated and talented students. We are a statewide, public residential high school for 11th and 12th graders specializing in the advanced study of science and mathematics. The students come from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds. This year’s incoming class represents 80% of the counties in South Carolina, and 33% of the students identify as an ethnic minority. Historically, GSSM has maintained a 10:1 student to faculty ratio. Hartsville offers many opportunities including Kalmia Gardens, Black Creek Arts Council, performances at Center Theater or Coker College, and several downtown shops and restaurants.
