The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an exceptional individual to join the GSSM team as our Public Safety Director.

For the next Public Safety Director, this will be a person who can provide leadership, instruction, and share duties with a staff of certified law enforcement officers and contracted security staff.
Experience of Applicants: Candidates must have an active South Carolina Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer Criminal Justice certification, a successful track record (8 years) of relevant experience, NCIC certification, and be able to obtain SLED commission upon hiring. We are looking for people with knowledge and experience supervising and training police officers and who have exceptional and persuasive written and verbal communication skills. The best candidates are ability to work successfully in a fast-paced environment with a diverse group of people; and the ability to work and identify improvement opportunities independently.
A bachelor’s degree in a supportive field is desired.
The major areas of responsibility for this position are:
- Serve as head law enforcement officer by directing activities of other law enforcement personnel, including security officers for the GSSM campus.
- Supervise and schedule security personnel to provide complete and consistent protection for the campus, students, employees, and guests.
- Plan, develop, and implement communication policies and procedures relative to school safety and campus security.
- Coordinate and implement training for all full-time, part-time, and security officers on procedures, equipment, and protocols for all shifts.
- Oversee safety systems of the school and maintain LEO commissions, certifications, and audits.
- Responds to and investigates safety and security concerns and, in consultation with appropriate Student Development personnel, regarding potential discipline and honor code violations.
- Directs and implements emergency procedures and drills.
- Create and manage regular patrol of campus grounds, building, and outside perimeter to ensure safety of the students and employees, deter crime, detect law violations and protect property.
- Develop and submit written safety reports.
- Respond to campus emergencies, provide assistance, and direct traffic and personnel as appropriate.
- Coordinate and facilitate regular meetings with local community law enforcement and emergency services personnel to support partnership and community safety.
- Document incidents and submit necessary reports as appropriate.
- Provide safety programming for students focused on situational awareness
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to maintain security standards.
- Manage and develop use of emergency alert systems, building access, monitoring, and alarm system to improve campus access, communications, and safety.
- Maintain awareness of best practices for school safety policies in practice at peer schools with similar needs.
This is a permanent, full-time position, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. Salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience.
