ENGINEERING INTERN
Description
Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA), a progressive water utility providing water, wastewater and reclaimed water services to the Towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, seeks a part-time, limited-term Engineering Intern. This position could last 3-4 months, working approximately 25-29 hours per week (flexibility in schedule during business hours). This position is part-time, temporary and not benefit eligible.
Duties
The Engineering Intern will perform a variety of duties including but not limited to the following:
- Assisting with the execution of the asset management plan
- Reviewing sewer CCTV data in order to inform the sewer rehab program
- Reviewing as-built data to assist with the Jones Ferry Water Treatment Plant (WTP)/ Mason Farm Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) GIS mapping efforts
- Compiling data and working with large data sets including data related to water and wastewater pipes, capital equipment, etc.
- Compiling and updating water and sewer pump runtime spreadsheets to evaluate overall efficiency and pump capacity/usage
- Assisting with compiling WTP and WWTP facility-wide valve program data for the organization wide high-priority valve maintenance program
- Analyzing SCADA data from the WTP and WWTP for various initiatives related to asset management and capital improvements
- Making and updating GIS maps and attribute tables for asset management and other engineering functions
- Working with the GIS Coordinator and Engineering Technicians to assist with GIS updates and survey updates
- Collecting asset information for the Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) system and working with the Maintenance Coordinator at the facilities
- Helping with CAD design of in-house projects for water line replacement projects and sewer line rehabilitation projects
Qualifications
Tasks will require a fundamental knowledge of engineering disciplines or equivalent experience. Ideal candidates are working towards a bachelor's or master's degree in civil/environmental engineering or a closely related field. Working knowledge and proficient skills in MS Office Software, particularly with Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Some experience in GIS and/or CAD is desirable. Must be detail oriented and have research and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written. Ability to work independently and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Must have a strong interest in learning about various aspects of the engineering department, and particularly the asset management program. Most time will be spent in the office environment but ability to work outside occasionally is desired.
