The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University’s missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.
The Center for Counseling and Student Development is part of the Division of Student Affairs and is the primary Counseling Center for the ECU student community. The Center for Counseling and Student Development is staffed by generalists who work well as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD) is an accredited counseling service (by IACS – International Association of Counseling Services) that provides free, confidential short-term counseling to currently enrolled ECU students. The Center also staffs psychiatrists and psychiatric residents who provide medication consultation and treatment.
Services include individual, group, and crisis counseling. The most common presenting issues are adjustment concerns, depression, anxiety, alcohol and other drug concerns, and relationship issues. The Counseling Center also routinely provides consultation to faculty, staff, family, and friends who are concerned about the well-being of an ECU student. CCSD also facilitates approximately 200 educational presentations each year to classrooms, residence halls, and student groups on topics such as alcohol and other drug safety, stress management, and emotional health.
Job Duties
The primary responsibilities of the Victim Advocate are to provide case management, advocacy, referrals, counseling, and crisis intervention, to victims/survivors of sexual assault, rape, harassment, relationship violence, stalking, and other forms of crime. Additional responsibilities include educational programming and accompanying victims to the hospital, police department, court and/or relevant university offices.
This position will provide leadership within Student Affairs and the ECU campus community regarding interventions and programming relating to sexual assault and violence prevention. The Victim Advocate will work collaboratively with fellow Victim Advocacy staff and other university offices and will be well-versed in issues associated with the Clery Act, Title IX, and Campus SaVE Act.
Specific Duties:
Provide case management and follow up services for identified victims/survivors.
- Determine a treatment plan which may involve: crisis management, educational interventions, possible hospitalizations, adjunctive psychopharmacological services and referrals on and off campus.
- Conduct crisis assessments of students who are victims of crimes such as assaults, rape, abuse, harassment, or stalking.
- Consult with appropriate staff or committees to ensure that students’ rights and safety needs are being met.
Consult with other university offices regarding violence prevention.
- Be available for consultations to university faculty, staff, administrators, and visitors.
- Develop and maintain a close working relationship with the Dean of Students Office, Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Student Health Services, Campus Living, and the Title IX Coordinator or designee.
- Coordinate services and programming with the ECU Police, particularly the Community Affairs officers.
- Serve on university committees addressing the psycho-social aspects of students’ university experience.
Provide campus-wide programming related to interpersonal violence, including prevention programs.
- Take a leadership role within the division for all programming, services, and referrals related to violence prevention.
- Provide training to RA’s, judicial conduct board members and other staff and student groups.
- Implement comprehensive educational programs that include bystander intervention training and reaches the campus community through various means.
Provide counseling, information, and referrals to victims/survivors relevant to their physical, social, and emotional wellbeing, as well as their academic performance.
Provide rotating after hours and emergency on call coverage for the ECU community related to victim advocacy.
- Act as an on-call responder to students who are victims of violence. Response may be in person or via phone and will typically entail crisis intervention, accompanying students to the hospital, informing the student of resources, arranging for next day interventions, and appropriate follow-up.
Provide critical follow-up services with victims/survivors
- Consult with significant others of the victim/survivor with permission to offer information, resources and referrals.
Supervise graduate-level counseling practicum and internship students as relevant.
Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related human service field. One year direct experience working with survivors of interpersonal violence. Must possess a working knowledge of crisis and/or trauma-related interventions appropriate for late adolescent and adult development. Eligible for licensure within NC as a clinical social worker, counselor or psychologist.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Three years of experience working in a higher education setting and/or as a victim’s advocate. Current licensure as a clinical social worker, counselor, or psychologist. Demonstrated interest in and experience working with college students including diverse and/or underrepresented college student populations. Demonstrated ability in outreach and program development. Demonstrated knowledge of criminal processes and legal issues relevant to informing and assisting victims of crime. Excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills, strong presentation and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to thoroughly document conversations and actions regarding case management. Ability to build positive and effective relationships across the campus and community. Commitment to diversity. Ability to work both collaboratively and independently with minimal supervision. Ability to manage multiple tasks. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed. Ability to provide exemplary customer service.
